How do you spend the first hour of your day?
Saying a prayer, checking in with loved ones, and spending about 20 minutes scrolling through social media.

What sparked your interest in accounting or finance?
My fascination began in high school during my economics and management sciences class. I loved how financial data told a story about a company's health and future. This interest deepened when I started saving for my first laptop, learning how financial planning and strategic decisions impacted outcomes. It showed me how powerful financial insights could be, driving my passion for the profession.

Can you share some key career milestones or defining moments?
Some of my most defining moments include:

  1. Completing Articles: The open-door culture and mentorship shaped me into the professional I am today.

  2. Passing the APC Exam: This accomplishment reaffirmed my abilities and marked a pivotal moment in my journey to becoming a CA(SA).

  3. Acting as a Junior Audit Manager: In my third year of articles, I was entrusted with managing two assignments, including a listed subsidiary. This opportunity solidified my leadership and technical skills.

What is your role within your company’s finance department?
As a Junior Audit Manager, I am the first-line reviewer of the team’s work, ensuring accuracy and quality. I provide on-the-ground coaching and guidance to enhance efficiency and maintain high standards.

How do you contribute to the overall financial strategy of the business?
I conduct thorough audits that ensure financial integrity and compliance. By analysing data and industry trends, I offer valuable insights that inform strategic decisions, streamline processes, and strengthen client trust.

What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your role? How did you overcome it?
Managing friendships with colleagues who are now trainees under my leadership has been challenging. Clear communication, setting boundaries, and leading by example helped me navigate this while maintaining professionalism and fostering trust within the team.

What tools or strategies do you use to manage the financial operations of the company effectively?
I prioritise tasks with a daily planner, take regular breaks, and communicate openly with my team to foster a collaborative and supportive environment.

Share your strategies for staying balanced, especially during busy periods.
Regular exercise, fresh air during breaks, and open dialogue with colleagues help me maintain balance. Planning my tasks in smaller, manageable steps prevents overwhelm.

What do you enjoy outside of work?
I love beachfront walks, hiking, playing hockey, bowling with friends, and binge-watching my favourite series. These activities rejuvenate me and provide a much-needed escape from work.

Do you mentor or support other team members in the finance department?
Yes, I actively mentor and coach team members by tailoring training to individual needs, offering feedback, and creating a supportive learning environment. I also assist third-years in finalising their competency reports.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to work in a finance department within a company?
Focus on technical knowledge like IFRS and audit methodologies, while also developing soft skills like communication and teamwork. Continuous learning and staying updated on industry trends will set you apart.

What’s your favourite quote or mantra that motivates you?
‘Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.’

Share a leadership lesson or a piece of advice that’s been valuable to you in your career.
Leading by example builds trust and fosters collaboration. Demonstrating integrity and openness inspires others and drives team success.

What’s something surprising about you that isn’t in your professional bio?
In Grade 9 history, I learned about Archduke Franz Ferdinand, who shared my maiden name, and his role in the events leading to World War I.

If you could have any superpower to help you in your job, what would it be?
The ability to instantly understand and interpret complex data for faster and more accurate insights.

What’s your go-to strategy for staying productive during long workdays?
I use music to stay focused and energised, and I always ensure I plan and prioritise my tasks effectively.

If you could relive one day from your career, which day would it be and why?

The day our team completed a challenging audit for a major client. The sense of accomplishment and client appreciation reinforced my passion for what I do.
