The SA Social Security Agency (Sassa) has now made it possible to apply by for the R350 unemployment grant by email, WhatsApp and SMS.
Sassa said it was launching the online application service due to the Covid-19 closure of its offices, though field workers will be despatched to deal with those who do not have access to technology.
The Agency expects roughly six million South Africans to qualify for the grant. According to Business Insider, the temporary Covid-19 grant is for the unemployed over the age of 18, who are receiving no other form of government assistance, including from the Unemployment Insurance Fund and the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. They also can’t live in a government funded or subsidised institution. The grant will be available to South African citizens, permanent residents or refugees registered with Home Affairs. They have to live in South Africa.
Applications can be made by emailing SRD@sassa.gov.za and filling out the form automatically returned, or by sending a Whatsapp message at 060 012 3456.
