Why Should Your Clients Care About B-BBEE?

For your clients, having a good B-BBEE rating can open doors to bigger business opportunities. Many large companies and the government prefer working with businesses that have good B-BBEE scores. If your clients aren’t compliant, they might miss out on key contracts or tenders.

Even smaller businesses can benefit. If they’re B-BBEE compliant, they have a better chance of securing deals with bigger companies. As advisors, you play an important role in guiding your clients through this process.

Types of Businesses Under B-BBEE

There are different categories under B-BBEE, depending on your client's business size:

  • Exempted Micro Enterprises (EMEs): These are small businesses with less than R10 million in annual turnover. EMEs automatically qualify for a Level 4 B-BBEE rating. If they’re at least 51% black-owned, they get a Level 2 rating, and 100% black-owned EMEs can reach Level 1. They can simply submit a signed affidavit, making the process easy.

  • Qualifying Small Enterprises (QSEs): These are businesses earning between R10 million and R50 million per year. If they’re 51% black-owned, they also qualify for Level 2 and 100% black-owned for Level 1, without needing a full verification. If they have less black ownership, they’ll need to meet other requirements and go through a more detailed process.

  • Medium and Large Enterprises: For businesses earning more than R50 million, compliance becomes more complex. These businesses must meet all the requirements across the B-BBEE scorecard and undergo a full verification process.

The Five Key Elements of B-BBEE

The B-BBEE scorecard is made up of five key parts. It’s important to help your clients understand and improve these areas to get a better B-BBEE score:

  1. Ownership: This measures how much of the business is owned by black individuals. The higher the black ownership, the better the score.

  2. Management Control: This looks at the number of black individuals in senior management roles. Encouraging diversity in leadership can improve your clients' scores.

  3. Skills Development: This is about training black employees. By offering training, internships, and mentorship programs, your clients can earn more points.

  4. Enterprise and Supplier Development: This focuses on working with black-owned suppliers and supporting black businesses. By mentoring smaller black-owned businesses or buying from them, your clients can improve their B-BBEE rating.

  5. Socio-Economic Development: This measures how much a business contributes to improving local communities, like through education or healthcare projects. Helping communities can also boost the B-BBEE score.

Why Non-Compliance Can Hurt Your Clients

If your clients aren’t compliant, they may struggle to win tenders or contracts, especially from the government or big companies. B-BBEE compliance is often a requirement to do business with these organisations. Failing to meet the requirements can limit their growth and business opportunities.
