Cyber Fraud Alert, Beware of Fraudsters Impersonating SARS

In the digital age, cyber fraud has become an increasingly common threat, particularly in the realm of tax-related matters. Recently, several taxpayers have reported receiving fraudulent emails and SMS messages from individuals posing as the South African Revenue Service (SARS). These fraudsters often send identical messages requesting payments, like the one demanding R1470.00 from the email address collections@sarspayment.org.

It's crucial for taxpayers to stay vigilant and recognise the signs of fraud. Here's what to look out for and how to protect yourself:

Check the Sender’s Email Address

SARS will never send official communications from suspicious domains like sarspayment.org. Genuine SARS emails are always sent from addresses ending in @sars.gov.za. If you receive an email from any other domain, it’s likely fraudulent.

Unexpected Payment Requests

Be cautious if you're asked to make a payment that you weren't expecting. Fraudsters often use urgent language, requesting immediate payment. SARS typically provides detailed statements and explanations for any outstanding amounts due. Verify such claims by contacting SARS directly through their official channels.

Unsolicited SMS or WhatsApp Messages

SARS communicates with taxpayers through secure methods. While they may send SMS notifications, these will never request sensitive personal information or payments. Be wary of any unsolicited SMS or WhatsApp messages asking for your details, especially if they include links to suspicious websites.

Look for Poor Grammar and Spelling Errors

Official communications from SARS are usually well-written and professional. Fraudulent messages often contain typos, poor grammar, or formatting issues. If the message looks unprofessional, this is a strong indicator of fraud.

Verify via the SARS Website

Always cross-check any requests you receive via email or SMS by logging into the official SARS eFiling portal (www.sarsefiling.co.za) or contacting the SARS call center. This is the safest way to verify the legitimacy of any communications related to your tax affairs.

Report Fraud Immediately

If you receive a suspicious message or email, report it to SARS immediately. Forward fraudulent emails to phishing@sars.gov.za and avoid clicking on any links or downloading attachments. Reporting these incidents helps SARS track and stop cyber fraud.

Educate Yourself and Your Employees

Businesses and individuals alike should invest time in educating themselves and their staff about the common signs of cyber fraud. Regular updates on scams targeting taxpayers can help reduce the likelihood of falling victim to fraudsters.

Final Thoughts

Fraudsters are becoming increasingly sophisticated in their attempts to scam taxpayers. Staying informed and alert is your best defense. Always verify before taking action, especially when dealing with financial matters. By doing so, you can protect your hard-earned money and keep your sensitive information safe from cybercriminals.

Stay safe and remember: SARS will never ask for sensitive information via email or SMS.
