Poultry Industry Moves to Boost Exports and Growth
The poultry sector is set to expand its export market and grow the local economy under a new strategy led by Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry, and Competition (DTI), Mr. Zuko Godlimpi. The Phase Two of the Poultry Master Plan issued in 2019, currently being developed, will focus on exporting more poultry products, increasing local demand, and supporting small businesses.
The first phase of the Master Plan (2019–2023) tackled key challenges such as high feed costs, competition from imports, and export barriers. Now, Phase Two will focus on:
Growing poultry exports, especially cooked products
Strengthening local demand and trade protection
Improving biosecurity measures for local and export markets
Supporting small farmers and funding initiatives
Other proposed measures include removing VAT on certain poultry products and addressing food security and job creation. The DTI will continue to work with industry leaders to ensure local producers are protected from imports while expanding South Africa’s poultry exports.
With the industry contributing R72 billion annually to the economy, this plan is set to boost growth, create jobs, and strengthen the agricultural sector.
