What time do you usually wake up on weekends?
6:00 AM

Are you an early bird or a night owl?
Early Bird

How do you spend the first hour of your morning?
On weekends, I get started with household chores

What sparked your interest in accounting or finance?
When I was in Grade 8, I performed a bank reconciliation for the first time. I felt the spark when it balanced, and I have been obsessed with accounting ever since

Can you share some key career milestones or defining moments?
I studied for my BCompt degree through UNISA while working full-time. When I completed my degree, I approached my company at the time to gain experience in the accounting department but was turned down. Determined, I applied for jobs to do my articles and received an offer in Umhlanga. Moving away from home was daunting, but the 3 years I spent doing articles provided invaluable experience, propelling my career forward

What is your role within your company’s finance department?
As a Financial Accountant, I am in charge of the full trial balance

How do you contribute to the overall financial strategy of the business?
I ensure that all data entered into the accounting system is valid and accurate, enabling senior management to rely on the financial reports generated to make informed decisions. I also adhere to strict deadlines for monthly reporting and both external and internal audits

What is one of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in your role? How did you overcome it?
One of the biggest challenges was managing multiple deadlines that were all due simultaneously. I overcame this by seeking assistance from junior staff and finding quicker ways to perform tasks

What tools or strategies do you use to manage the financial operations of the company effectively?
I always stick to IFRS guidelines

Share your strategies for staying balanced, especially during busy periods.
Taking a 10 to 15-minute break to get some sunshine and time away from my desk helps. Breath work and focusing on the five senses are also effective

What do you enjoy outside of work? Any hobbies or activities that help you recharge?
I love going to the Botanical Gardens, taking a walk, and enjoying the beautiful scenery

Do you mentor or support other team members in the finance department? How do you help develop the skills of others?
Yes, I do. I always explain to junior staff why certain things are done in a certain way and how small actions can have a big impact on the financial health of the company

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to work in a finance department within a company? What skills or knowledge should they focus on?
Do your 3 years of articles as they provide valuable experience for industry roles. Always look for ways to improve processes, free up time, and ensure you are proficient in Excel—completing an advanced Excel course is highly recommended

What’s your favourite quote or mantra that motivates you?
“Your happiness is up to you”

Share a leadership lesson or a piece of advice that’s been valuable to you in your career.
Always put your best foot forward and excel in every task; success will follow

What’s something surprising about you that isn’t in your professional bio? A hobby, interest, or fun fact?
I really enjoy singing

If you could have any superpower to help you in your job, what would it be?
Master multitasking

What’s your go-to strategy for staying productive during long workdays?
Writing down a list of tasks to complete for the day and marking them off as I go along
