These are the latest SARS phishing scams!

New tax season, new scams! SARS issued several statements last week warning taxpayers about phishing emails where fraudsters impersonate the revenue collector.

Last week, SARS issued several warnings regarding phishing scams where criminals use emails to impersonate the revenue service.
SARS notes:

“If you receive an email from one of these email addresses, please delete or ignore. If in doubt, email phishing@sars.gov.za.

ITR Service <tscompl@srs-za.com>

ITR Audit <ntr@rmbgov.za>

ITR Pay <audreq@eftr.co.za>

Tax audit <audreq@eftr.co.za>”

SARS reports that these scams use subject headings including: ‘Statement of Account request’, ‘eFiling Credit Request’ and ‘Debt Management – Final Demand’.

These fraudulent emails ask recipients to download ‘statements’ or follow links. SARS urges recipients to delete these messages. If in doubt, SARS advises people to use their scams and phishing webpage on the sars.gov.za website.

SARS advises the following

  • Do not open or respond to emails from unknown sources.

  • Beware of emails that ask for personal, tax, banking and eFiling details (login credentials, passwords, pins, credit/debit card information, etc.).

  • SARS will never request your banking details in any communication that you receive via post, email, or SMS. However, for the purpose of telephonic engagement and authentication purposes, SARS will verify your personal details. Importantly, SARS will not send you any hyperlinks to other websites – even those of banks.

  • Beware of false SMSs.

  • SARS does not send *.htm or *.html attachments.

  • SARS will never ask for your credit card details.
