Suhayle Ballim, head of SHL Wholesalers, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for claiming false tax refunds. Ballim, involved in a scam called "ghost exports," falsely reported exporting goods to secure VAT refunds totaling R15.6 million. The case, delayed by Ballim's tactics, took 14 years to resolve.

The investigation by SARS revealed fake documents at Ballim’s business and home. He used the fraudulent money to fund his luxurious lifestyle. SARS Commissioner Edward Kieswetter emphasized that such tax fraudsters would face strict penalties.
