Tax Ombud’s Annual Report Reveals Key Stats on Taxpayer Support

The Office of the Tax Ombud (OTO) is dedicated to safeguarding taxpayer rights, offering an independent and fair platform to resolve disputes with SARS. Despite its recommendations being non-binding, the impressive 99.77% implementation rate by SARS speaks to the OTO’s influence and credibility.

The OTO’s impact extends beyond individual complaints. By actively engaging with stakeholders and continuously educating the public on their rights and the services available, the OTO works to create a more balanced and responsive tax environment.

In its 2023/24 Annual Report, the OTO is showcases a significant rise in taxpayer engagement. Over the past year, the OTO's contact center handled 17,014 calls—up by 13.28% from last year—with 12,338 queries and 4,676 complaints. Notably, SARS implemented 99.77% of the OTO's non-binding recommendations, a strong indication of the OTO's influence in tax dispute resolutions. Additionally, through OTO's intervention, top taxpayer refunds reached over R179 million, a striking increase from R103 million the previous year. This upward trend highlights the OTO’s vital role in supporting taxpayer rights and promoting compliance​.
