National Treasury Opens Applications for Large Infrastructure Funding

National Treasury issued a Media Statement announcing a new opportunity for public institutions to apply for funding for large infrastructure projects. This is part of the Budget Facility for Infrastructure (BFI), a system that helps finance projects that need government support.

What is the BFI?

The BFI is a funding program designed to support large-scale infrastructure projects that require at least R1 billion in funding. These projects could include building roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, and energy projects. The government wants to make sure that the money is spent wisely, so all proposals must go through a strict review process before they are approved.

Who Can Apply?

Government institutions that can apply include:

  • National, provincial, and municipal governments

  • Public entities (such as state-owned companies).

The Application Process

The government has set four application windows each year. The first window is already open and will close on 16 April 2025. Proposals submitted after the deadline will be considered in the next round.

To apply, institutions must submit detailed project proposals that include:

  • A project description (what it is and why it is needed) financial plan (how the money will be used)

  • A risk assessment (possible challenges and solutions)

  • Economic and social benefits (how the project will help communities).

Proposals must be submitted to the National Treasury and will be reviewed by a committee. Read more in the Circular for the Consideration of Proposals by the BFI.

Note: Only well-planned and investment-worthy projects will receive government support. This initiative aims to fast-track infrastructure development in South Africa by ensuring that only well-prepared and impactful projects receive funding. It also allows the government to better manage public spending and make sure taxpayer money is used efficiently.
